The academy traces its direct lineage to Roberto Maia, a fifth-degree black belt. Head instructor Jay Mansfield, a fourth-degree black belt, began his training under Maia in 1999 and earned his black belt in 2008 at Gracie Barra Boston. Mansfield is a three-time Pan American medalist, two-time NAGA champion, two-time Copa Atlantica champion, and World championship medalist.
